about

With 2021’s return of their monthly parties and stunning releases on their label, Coloring Lessons is unquestionably one of the most exciting things to come out of NYC. When it comes to championing high - quality, classic yet futuristic house music, the musclecars’ led label have been one to take note of. Coloring Lessons is set to release their annual compilation featuring all of your favorite artists from NYC and beyond.

The compilation features new music from artists in their community, including new Lee Pearson Jr. Collective, futuristic jazz from Sound Signature’s Meftah, a soulful ballad from Ian Friday, powerful vocals from Brandon Markell Holmes, a dancefloor journey from Javonntte, a surprising banger from Coloring Lessons founders, musclecars, and much, much more!

As we gear up for our terrible two’s as a "record label" , we think about where we’re at and what we’re even doing here. There’s so much music coming out in the world, it feels slightly conceited to assume people also need to hear your music too. It’s something like imposter syndrome but on an even larger scale.

Luckily, every time those thoughts manifest, something very special happens. Malik Hendricks will get a raving review on his EP, the EP from musclecars will get airplay from some of their inspirations- you know, stuff like that. Hearing this masterful set of tunes by these 16 extremely talented artists was like finding a whole slew of new reasons to keep pushing forward. 16 different reminders of how important it is to keep carving out a space in the scene, and giving talented artists a platform to do the damn thang. At the end of the day that’s what it’s all about, right?

To that, we have some brief thank you’s because it really does take a village. First and foremost our artistic director, Adrianne Born (responsible for everything you see and more). Bowen and Vanessa over at Mood Ring; Andrew, Jerome, and Bridgette at Le Bain; Justin & Eamon at Nowadays. The party wouldn’t be what it is without the help of these folks. Francois for giving us space on the airwaves at the Lot Radio. Our good friends Barbie & Paul for the constant guidance. All the record shops in our city and beyond for pushing our records and the extra support (fat shout to Brian / Butter, Shawn Dub, Simon, Jay Locke and Joaquin, to name a few). All the editors and writers for the beautiful words and reviews. All the contributing artists on this compilation for making such an outstanding release. Most importantly, the biggest thank you of all to the listeners, dancers, and supporters alike- whether you’re getting down at the parties or listening in your own living room. We’re eternally grateful and we’re only just getting started.
